ریاض-- سعودی عرب کی تاریخ میں پہلی بار عوام کی قلیل تعداد نے اپنے حق میں مظاہرہ کیا ہے۔ فرانسیسی خبررساں ادارے کے مطابق سرکاری سطح پر پابندی کے باوجود ریاض میںدرجنوں مرداورخواتین جمع ہوئے جنہوں نے ٹرائل کے بغیر اپنے رشتہ داروں کو زیرحراست رکھنے کیخلاف احتجاج کیا ۔ یہ لوگ وزارت داخلہ کے باہر جمع ہوئے اور اپنے رشتہ داروں کو رہا کرنے کا مطالبہ کررہے تھے۔ ایک خاتون نے پلے کارڈ اٹھارکھا جس پر لکھا تھا ’خدا راہمارے قیدیوں کو رہا کرائیں‘ اس موقع پر پولیس کی بھاری نفری تعینات کی گئی تھی جنہوں نے مظاہرین کو وزارت داخلہ سے دور رکھا۔

Scope	\|	The Jamaraat Bridge is a pedestrian bridge in Mina, Saudi Arabia near Mecca used by Muslims during the stoning of the devil ritual of the Hajj. The bridge was originally constructed in 1963, and has been expanded several times since then. The purpose of the bridge is to enable pilgrims to throw stones at the three jamrah pillars from either the ground level or from the bridge. The pillars extend up through three openings in the bridge. The new Jamrat Bridge is designed to hold 250,000 pilgrims an hour.
Schedule	\|	Dar Al Handasah Consultants is the main consultant, while Saudi Binladin Group is the main contractor. Construction started early of 2006. In October 2009, 70 percent of the bridge is completed. The project will be fully operational during the Hajj season of 2009.
Remark	\|	"Jamaraat" is the plural of Jamrah which is the Arabic term for each of the pillars involved in the stoning ritual. It literally means a small piece of stone or a pebble.

سعودی عرب کے سینئر علما بورڈ کے رکن عبداللہ بن محمد المطلق نے کہا ہے کہ اگر عازمین حج کو یہ خدشہ، ڈر یا خوف ہو کہ سنگِ اسود کا بوسہ لینے سے انہیں سوائن فلو یا میکسیکن فلو لاحق ہوسکتا ہے تو ایسے افراد سنگِ اسود کا بوسہ لینے سے گریز کرسکتے ہیں۔ اُنہوں نے کہا کہ مناسک حج ملتوی نہیں کئے جا سکتے (کچھ علما حضرات کا خیال ہے کہ امسال حج ملتوی یا روک دیا جائے) اور نہ ہی سنگِ اسود کا بوسہ لینے سے عازمین کو روکا جا سکتا ہے۔ اس سوال پر کہ اگر عازمین یہ جانتے ہوئے کہ وہ علیل ہیں یا کسی وبا میں مبتلا ہیں یا کسی اچھوت بیماری کا شکار ہیں اور اس کے باوجود وہ سنگِ اسود کا بوسہ لے رہے ہیں تو اس سلسلے میں آپ کا لائحہ عمل کیا ہوگا؟ عبداللہ بن محمد المطلق نے کہا کہ عازمین کو اس بات کی اجازت نہیں کہ وہ اپنا مرض یا بیماری دوسروں تک پھیلائیں۔ چونکہ مسلمان ایک دوسرے کے بھائی ہوتے ہیں اس لئے ایک بھائی جو اپنے لئے بہتر سمجھتا ہے وہی وہ دوسرے کے لئے بھی بہتر جانتا ہے۔ کوئی مسلمان یہ گوارا نہیں کرے گا کہ وہ اپنا مرض دوسروں تک پھیلائے۔ قبل ازیں سعودی حکام کی جانب سے عازمین حج کے لئے چند ہدایات جاری کی گئی ہیں، انہیں انتباہ کیا گیا ہے کہ عازمین ”مخالف جنس“ سے بات چیت نہ کریں، راستہ بھولنے کی صورت میں ”مخالف جنس“ سے مدد نہ طلب کریں، خواتین کی تصویریں نہ لیں، مرد عازمین بسوں میں خواتین کے قریب نشست پر نہ بیٹھیں اور نہ ہی خواتین مردوں کے قریب بیٹھنے کی کوشش کریں۔ دوسری طرف سرکاری خبر رساں ایجنسی منا کے مطابق سعودی وزارت صحت نے بچوں، حاملہ خواتین اور دائمی و دیرینہ امراض میں مبتلا یا سوائن فلو سے متاثرہ افراد کو حج اور عمرہ ادا نہ کرنے کا انتباہ کیا ہے۔ مصر نے سوائن فلو کے خطرے کے پیش نظر اپنے شہریوں کو ہدایت کی ہے کہ وہ مکہ اور مدینہ کا سفر اختیار نہ کریں۔ سعودی عرب کے شہروں مکہ اور مدینہ میں 25 لاکھ عازمین حج کی آمد متوقع ہے۔
ادھر سعودی حکام نے عازمین حج کو وارننگ دی ہے کہ انہیں دوران حج سیاسی مسائل اٹھانے کی اجازت نہیں ہوگی اور اگر کسی نے احکام کی پابندی نہ کی تو سخت ایکشن لیا جائے گا۔ اس سال سعودی حکام حرمین پہنچنے والے مسلمان ایرانی مذہبی رہنماوٴں کی باتوں سے حد درجہ مضطرب و پریشان ہیں۔ انہوں نے عازمین کے سامنے تقریر کرتے ہوئے کہا ہے کہ ”بیت اللہ کا حج کرنے والے ان مسائل و مشکلات سے ہرگز لاتعلقی اور بے پروائی اختیار نہ کریں جن مشکلات کا سامنا آج عالمِ اسلام کو بالخصوص عراق، افغانستان، فلسطین اور پاکستان کے ایک حصے کو ہے“۔ ایرانی آیت اللہ کی بات ایرانیوں کے لئے حکم کا درجہ رکھتی ہے۔ ان کی حیثیت کسی صحافی یا جمعہ کے خطیب جیسی نہیں ہوتی کہ ان کی بات ایک کان سے سنی جائے اور دوسرے کان سے اڑا دی جائے۔ ان باتوں پر ترکی کے وزیراعظم یا سعودی وزیر خارجہ کی جانب سے جو احتجاج کیا گیا ہے ممکن ہے حکومت ایران اس کا یہ جواب دے کہ یہ ان کی ذاتی رائے ہے لیکن میرے حساب سے وہ اسی مظاہرے اور احتجاج کا سبق پڑھا رہے تھے جس نے اسّی کی دہائی میں اسلام کے ایک رکن حج کو گدلا کردیا تھا اور دنیائے اسلام کو پریشانیوں میں ڈال دیا تھا۔ حج کے موقع پر صرف ایک یہی پریشانی نہیں عازمین حج کے اخراجات میں بھی بہت زیادہ اضافہ ہوگیا ہے۔ عازمین حج کے فضائی کرایوں میں پہلے ہی اضافہ ہوچکا ہے، اب حرم کعبہ کے اطراف رہائش کے لئے رہائشی اخراجات میں بھی اضافہ کردیا گیا ہے۔ مسجد الحرام کے اطراف گرین ایریا میں شیلٹرز کی شرح 2700 سعودی ریال سے بڑھا کر 3500 ریال کردی گئی ہے۔ دوسری رہائشی پٹی میں جسے وائٹ ایریا کہا جاتا ہے رہائشی فیس 1600 ریال سے بڑھا کر 2500 ریال کردی گئی ہے۔ اسی طرح بیرونی احاطہ میں رہائشی فیس 1200 سے بڑھا کر 1500 ریال کردی گئی ہے۔ چونکہ فضائی کرائے کے زمرے میں پٹرول کو جواز بنایا گیا ہے اس لئے پٹرول کے ساتھ حج بھی مہنگا ہوگیا ہے۔
اب حج کی بات چلی ہے تو کیوں نہ اپنے ذہنی خدشات، سوالات اور تحفظات کی بات بھی کرتا چلوں۔ سوال یہ ہے کہ جن لوگوں پر ذمہ داری عائد ہوتی ہے کہ وہ قرآن پاک اور اسلامی تعلیمات کو دیانت دارانہ طریقہ پر ہم تک پہنچائیں کیا وہ اپنے اس فرض کو ادا کرنے میں دیانت دار رہتے ہیں؟ یا انہوں نے خود کو ”دینی و مذہبی حکمران“ سمجھ کر مسلمانوں کو چرب زبانی کی لاٹھی سے پیٹ پیٹ کر ”سیدھا“ کرنے کی قسم کھا لی ہے۔ وہ صرف اسلام اسلام کے ورق کوٹنے پر لگے ہوئے ہیں اور صحیح جواب دینے سے گریز کرتے ہیں۔ وہ مذہب یا دین سے متعلق کسی سوال کا تشفی و تسلی بخش جواب دے سکیں۔ میرے ساتھ خود کو ایسا واقعہ پیش آیا تھا۔ میں نے ایمسٹرڈیم میں مولانا طاہر القادری کو ایک اجتماع میں ایک تحریری سوال نامہ پیش کیا جو ان کے نائبین نے وصول کرکے مولانا کی خدمت میں پیش کیا۔ میرا پہلا سوال تھا کہ حج بدل کا حکم قرآن کریم کی کس آیت میں ہے؟ دوسرا سوال یہ تھا کہ عیدالاضحٰی کے موقع پر جو قربانی مسلمان کرتے ہیں کیا مقام حج کے علاوہ یہ مسلمانوں پر فرض ہے؟ اگر یہ فرض ہے تو اس کا حکم غیر مقام حج کیلئے قرآن کی کس آیت سے ثابت ہے؟
حج بدل کا کوئی حکم میری نظر سے نہیں گزرا۔ یہ سلسلہ کیسے قائم ہوا اور کس نے ایجاد کیا اس پر میں یہاں بحث نہیں کروں گا صرف اتنا عرض کروں گا کہ مرنے کے بعد انسان کا عمل سے تعلق ٹوٹ جاتا ہے اور اس کی کتاب عمل بند کردی جاتی ہے اور قرآن کریم کا صاف اعلان ہے کہ کسی کا بوجھ کوئی دوسرا نہیں اُٹھائے گا۔ کیا کوئی مفتی دین یا کوئی اور واعظ و شیخ تاریخ سے یہ ثابت کرسکتا ہے کہ کسی صحابی نے حج بدل کیا ہو؟ یا حضور اکرم یا خلفائے راشدین  کے زمانے میں مسلمانوں میں حج بدل کا رُجحان قائم ہو؟ اسی طرح غیر مقام حج پر جانورو کی قربانی کیسے واجب ہے ، میں نے اس سلسلے میں قرآن کریم کا مطالعہ کیا ہے، مجھے اللہ کی بات میں کوئی حوالہ نہ ملا۔ پھر میں نے رسول اللہ کی مقدس سوانح حیات کا مطالعہ کیا میں نے کہیں یہ نہیں پایا کہ آپ نے ان ایام میں جب آپ نے حج ادا نہیں کیا مکہ معظمہ یا مدینہ منورہ میں قربانی کا فریضہ ادا کیا ہو۔ میں مانتا ہوں کہ دین کے معاملے میں ایک طالب علم ہوں یا دین کے معاملے میں نابینا رہا ہوں، ہوسکتا ہے کہ قرآن کریم میں وہ آیات مجھ کو نظر نہ آئی ہوں جن سے یہ ثابت ہوسکے کہ قربانی دنیا کے ہر اہل زر مسلمان پر واجب ہے۔ قربانی سے متعلق قرآن میں سورة البقرة کی آیت ۶۹۱، سورة الحج کی آیت ۴۳،۸۱ اور 37، 36 ہے جو حج سے ہی وابستہ ہے لیکن ان میں کہیں بھی کوئی ایسی بات درج نہیں جس سے میری تشفی ہوسکے۔ ہے کوئی دانشور، علما و مشائخ جو میری اس تشنگی کو قرآنی آیات کے حوالے سے بجھائ

سعودی نائب وزیرداخلہ شہزادہ محمد بن نائف خود کش حملے میں زخمی ہو گئے جبکہ حملہ آور ہلاک ہو گیا۔ سعودی سرکاری خبر رساں ادارے ایس پی اے نے خود کش حملہ آور کی شناخت ظاہر نہیں کی ہے۔

یہ واقعہ اس وقت پیش آیا جب ایک شدت پسند نے شہزادہ محمد بن نائف سے ملاقات کرنے اور ان کے سامنے گرفتاری دینے کو کہا تاہم جب اسے جدہ میں سعودی وزارت داخلہ کے عمارت میں واقع شہزادہ محمد نائف کے دفتر میں لایا گیا تو اس نے دھماکا کر دیا۔

دھماکے کے وقت شہزادہ محمد ماہ رمضان کے سلسلے میں لوگوں سے ملاقات کر رہے تھے اور وہ اس دھماکے میں معمولی زخمی ہوئے . دھماکے کے بعد انہوں نے شاہ عبداللہ سے ملاقات کی، اور دہشت گردی کے خلاف جنگ میں اپنے عزم کا اعادہ کیا،۔

Indonesian Maids Face Similar Woes in Malaysia

JAKARTA, 11 August 2009 (IRIN) - Public outcry over an Indonesian domestic worker’s alleged abuse by her Malaysian employer has prompted the Indonesian government to demand better protection for its citizens working in the neighbouring country.

With red blisters and scabs on her face and upper body, Siti Hajar fled her employer's house and sought shelter at the Indonesian embassy in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, in June.

Hajar told the media her female employer had hit her and poured boiling water over her and repeatedly beaten her with a cane over a 34-month period. Her ex-employer has since been charged and could face 20 years in prison.

Her story of abuse is one of several involving Indonesians in Malaysia that have made headlines in recent years.

Last year, in a high-profile case that began in 2004, a Malaysian court sentenced a housewife to 18 years in prison for three attacks on her Indonesian domestic worker, Nirmala Bonat, using an iron and boiling water.

Protective measures

After Hajar’s story made the headlines in June, Indonesia's Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration temporarily suspended sending domestic workers to Malaysia until the two countries could agree measures to protect them.

Indonesian and Malaysian officials have since met to discuss a revision of a 2006 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on domestic workers.

The MoU has been criticized by human rights advocates for not being strong enough to protect workers from abuse, including having to work gruelling hours for low salaries.

The Indonesian government wants a new agreement that entitles domestic workers to basic rights such as days off and periodic salary increases, and allows them to retain their passports. Under the current MoU, employers have the right to hold employees’ passports while the workers are given identity cards issued by Malaysian authorities.

Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said Malaysia had agreed in principle to meet the demands. "There is progress but we will need to put it in a written document."

About two million Indonesians work in Malaysia, many as domestic helpers and plantation labourers. Indonesian migrant workers sent home US$8.2 billion in 2008, according to the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers, making remittances one of the country’s top foreign-exchange earners.

Rights begin at home

Rights activists pointed out that part of the problem was that Indonesian migrant workers were not adequately protected in their own country and blamed poor regulation.

"Malaysia is not 100 percent to blame in this case," said Anis Hidayah, executive director of Migrant Care, which lobbies for Indonesian workers’ rights overseas. "There should be changes in both countries' labour laws."

In a report this year, Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged the Indonesian government to establish the standards at home that it demands from others.

“Those considered formal workers in Indonesia are entitled to a minimum wage, overtime pay, an eight-hour workday and 40-hour work week, a weekly day of rest, and vacation. Domestic workers are not,” according to HRW.

Albert Bonasahat, coordinator for migrant worker protection at the International Labour Organization in Jakarta, said Indonesia would be better placed to bargain in negotiations with Malaysia if it passed its own legislation to protect domestic workers at home. "We should treat our workers at home the way we want them treated overseas."

Hidayah said her group had received thousands of complaints from domestic workers in Malaysia and that most cases of abuse went unreported.

"Even for cases reported by the media, the majority of them didn't reach clear legal resolution and in some cases they stopped at the investigation stage," she said.

زواجِ المسیار ، متعہ یا Legal Prostitution

پچھلے کئی صدیوں سے امت مسلمین عجیب خلفشار کا شکار ہے ۔ بہت سے معاشرتی مسائل کو سلجھانے کی بجائے یہ الجھانے پہ تلی ہوئی ہے۔ اب تک تو جماعت اہل سنت نے فقہ جعفریہ کے فتوے متعہ ( عارضی شادی ) کی خلاف ایک محاذ آرائی کر رکھی تھی ، نہ جانے کتنی کتابیں اس موضوع پہ لکھی گئیں اور علمأ کے کتنے شب و روز اسی مناظرے میں صرف ہوئے ، قرآن کی کتنی آیتوں کو کھنگالا گیا ، کتنی حدیثیں اس کے رد میں سنائی گئیں ، کتنی روایتوں سے اسے حرام قرار دیا گیا لیکن یہ کیا ہوا کہ مکہ مکرمہ میں اسلامی فقہ اکیڈمی نے اپنے ١٨ ویں اجلاس میں مختلف النوع شادی کے بارے میں فتوے جاری کئے جس میں خاص طور پہ طلاق کے ساتھ مشروط شادی ، عارضی شادی ، خفیہ شادی ، روایتی شادی ، فرینڈ شپ شادی ، سول میرج اور تجرباتی شادی شامل ہیں۔ اس اکیڈمی نے زواج المسیار یا اس جیسی دیگر شادیوں کی اجازت دی جس میں شادی کے جملہ شرائط و ضوابط پورے کئے گئے ہوں۔ اسلامی فقہ اکیڈمی رابطہ عالم اسلامی کے تحت ہے لیکن یہ ایک آزاد خود مختار اسلامی و علمی ادارہ ہے، جو امت مسلمہ کے منتخب علما و فقہا پر مشتمل ہے ۔ اس اجلاس میں ٦٠ علما و فقہا شریک تھے ۔ شادی کی شرائط جو الازہر یونیورسٹی کے علما سے ثابت ہیں وہ یہ ہیں کہ :

١۔ شادی کے لیے ولی امر اور گواہوں کی موجودگی ٢ ۔ مہر ٣۔کوئی شرعی رکاوٹ نہ ہو یعنی مسلم عورت کا نکاح غیر مسلم مرد سے نہیں ہوسکتا اسی طرح مشرکہ سے نکاح نہیں ہو سکتا ٤ ۔شادی کا اعلان ضروری نہیں ہے اسے خفیہ رکھا جا سکتا ٥ ۔اگر عورت رہائش کے حق سے دستبردار ہو جائے تو بھی ایسی شادی جائز ہے۔

زواج المسیار ایسی شادی ہے کہ جس کے تحت بیوی مکان ، نان نفقہ اور دولت کی تقسیم سے مکمل یا جزوی طور پر دستبردار ہو جاتی ہے اور اس بات پہ راضی ہوتی ہے کہ شوہر دن رات میں جب چاہے اس کے یہاں آئے جائے۔

اسلامی فقہ اکیڈمی کے اس فتوے سے زبردست اور متضاد رد عمل سامنے آیا ہے۔ کچھ مرد وزن نے فوری طور پہ اس سے استفادہ کیا اور کہنے لگے کہ کفر ٹوٹا خدا خدا کر کے، یہ شادی عارضی بھی ہو سکتی ہے اور خفیہ بھی اور مرد کو شادی کی مروجہذمہ داریوں سے بھی مبرہ کر دیتی ہے سو بہتی گنگا سے ہاتھ دھونے کا جواز فراہم کر تی ہے۔جو علما اس کے حق میں ہیں ان کا خیال یہ ہے کہ نوجوان مرد و عورت کو حرام کاری کی بجائے اس شادی کا فائدہ اٹھانا چاہیے ( یہ ایسے ہی ہے جیسے کوئی کہے کہ بسم اللہ پڑھ کر وہسکی پی جا سکتی ہے ) ، موافقت میں جو لوگ ہیں ان کی وضاحت یہ بھی ہے کہ المسیار سے معمر کنوارپن کا مسئلہ اور سیٹلائٹ چینل و دیگر فواحشات و شہوانی محرکات کی فتنہ انگیزیوں سے پیدا ہونے والی اخلاقی انحراف کا خاتمہ ہوگا۔ ( رات بھر خوب پی صبح ہوئی توبہ کر لی : رند کے رند رہے ہاتھ سے جنت نہ گئی )، یعنی بجائے اس کے کہ لوگوں کی تربیت ان معنوں میں کریں کہ اخلاق باختہ پروگرام نہ دیکھیں ور نہ پروڈیوس کریں اور غصِ بصر اور باطنی طہارت کی اہمیت کا احساس دلائیں یا معاشرے میں ایسے قوانین نافذ کریں جس سے طلاق کم سے کم ہو اور اعلانیہ و حلال شادیوں کی آسانی ہو، اس میں پیدا کی ہوئی انفرادی اور معاشرتی یا ثقافتی رکاوٹ دور ہو ۔ ان علما کو یہی نظر آیا کہ عورت و مرد کے لئے کوئی ایسی ترکیب نکال لی جائے کہ عارضی اور خفیہ طور پہ آگ کو پی جائیں یہ پانی کر کے اور اسے حلال سمجھ کے ضمیر کی ہر خلش سے بھی آزاد ہوجائیں۔ شہوانی محرکات کا جہاں تک تعلق ہے تو صلائے عام ہے یارانِ نکتہ داں کے لئے ۔

ہیجانی کیفیت طاری ہو تو فرینڈشپ ، عارضی و خفیہ شادی کر کے کسر پوری کر لیں۔ کھلے عام نہ سہی چھپا کے ہی سہی شہوانیات تو عام ہو ہی گئی نا ؟ عورتوں کو پابند کروچادر اور سر سے پیر تک نقاب میں ڈھانکے رہو لیکن انہیں اپنی نفسانی خواہشات کا ایک ذریعہ بنائے رہو ۔ چونکہ یہ جواز عورت و مرد کے لیے یکساں ہے سو یہ بھی نہیں کہا جا سکتا کہ عورت پہ ظاہراً کوئی ظلم ہو رہا ہے لیکن دیکھنے والی آنکھ یہ صاف دیکھتی ہے کہ اس کا زیادہ نقصان بھی عموماً عورتوں کو ہی ہوگا سوائے ان چند کے جن کے لئے کوئی اقتصادی یا مالی مسئلہ نہیں یا وہ جو پہلے ہی اپنی فطری شرم و حیا سے گریز کئے بیٹھی ہیں۔ ایک نقطۂ نظر یہ بھی ہے کہ اس سے عورتوں کے وقار و عزت میں مزید کمی آئے گی ۔پہلے ہی ہر معاشرے میں چاہے وہ شرق ہو کہ غرب مختلف حیلے بہانے سے مردوں نے عورتوں کو استعمال کیا ہوا ہے اور اسے اپنی حیوانیت کی
بھینٹ چڑھا دیا ہے۔ایک طرف چادر و نقاب پہنا کے لیکن اپنی پوشیدہ حرم سراؤں کو آباد کر کے تو دوسری طرف اسے آزادی اور برابری کا دلاسہ دے کر سرِعام برہنہ کر دیا ہے۔

ساری دنیا میں لے دے کے اسلام ہی وہ فکری اثاثہ ہے یا طرزِ حیات ہے جو عورتوں کی حرمت ، محافظت، عزت اور وراثت کا داعی ہے اور فطری توازن کے ساتھ مرد و عورت کے حقوق و ذمہ داریوں کی تفصیل فراہم کرتا ہے اور برابری کا ہی درجہ نہیں بلکہ بعض تعلقات و معاملات میں عورتوں کو زیادہ پر وقار بناتا ہے اور انہیں فوقیت بخشتا ہے لیکن المیہ یہ ہے کہ داعیانِ اسلام نے ایک علاقائی تہذیب ، کسی قبیلے کی مخصوص ثقافت کو اسلام بنا کر اس کی روح کو پامال کیا ہوا ہے۔

اگر یہ معاملہ اور فتویٰ صرف ایک مخصوص معاشرت و علاقے اور ملک کے شہریوں کے لئے ہے تو اسے اسلام کی ٹوپی کیوں پہنا دی گئی ہے ؟ اسے اسلام کا عمامہ کیوں باندھ دیا گیا ہے ؟ آپ کا جو جی چاہے کرتے رہیں ۔کس نے روکا ہے دورِ جاہلیہ کا رویہ اپنا لیں ؟ کچھ کا کہنا ہے کہ قرونِ اولیٰ میں بھی لوگ تجارت کے لئے کسی اور شہر جاتے تھے تو وہاں شادیاں کر لیتے تھے سو اسے اسلامی قراردیا جا سکتا ہے۔ قرون اولیٰ میں کوئی ضروری تو نہیں کہ سارے لوگ اسلام کی روح کو سمجھ پائے ہوں۔ انسانی فکر مخصوص دور میں منجمد نہیںہو ئی، یہ سیل رواں ہے اور زمانے کے تغیرات کے ساتھ منسلک ہے اور پھر ایک زمانے سے جو رسم رچی بسی ہووہ فوری طور پہ ختم بھی نہیں کی جا سکتی ، لوگ دور جاہلیہ میں لوٹنے کا کوئی نہ کوئی جواز نکال لیتے ہیں۔اگر لوگ پچاس پچاس بیویاں رکھتے تھے، یا ایک عورت کئی مردوں سے شادی کر لیا کرتی تھی ، یا لوگ قوم لوط جیسی حرکات میں مبتلا تھے یا لونڈیوں کے رکھنے کا عام رواج تھا تو ان ساری باتوں سے کیا اب ایسا کرنے کا جواز نکلتا ہے ؟ اسلام نے زیادہ سے زیادہ چار اعلانیہ شادیوں کی اجازت پورے انصاف اور ذمہ داریوں کے ساتھ دی ہے لیکن کوئی اس اجازت کو صرف دولت و ثروت کا سہارا لے کر اپنی شہوت رانی اور کثرت ازواج کا ذریعہ اس طر ح بنا لے کہ ایک وقت میں چار رکھے لیکن سیکڑوں سے ہم بستری کر کے انہیں طلاق دیتا رہے توکیایہ عمل جائز ہوگا اور اسے اسلامی قرار دیا جا سکتا ہے ؟ انسانیت سے گری ہوئی بات او رعمل کبھی اسلامی نہیں ہو سکتی۔

کچھ خواتین اور مرد یہ بھی کہتے ہیں کہ جب علمانے اس کا فتویٰ دے دیا تو ہم اس پہ اعتراض کر نے والے کون ہوتے ہیں ؟ چند علما کیا خدائی فوجدار ہیں ؟ اسلام کیا چند علما کی بے عقلی کا مرہونِ منت ہے یا کسی خاص علاقے کے لوگوں کے طرز ِ فکر کا پابند ہے۔ یہ ایک عالمی و آفاقی دین ہے۔ پورے عالم اسلام میںلوگ صرف ٦٠ علما کے پیروکار تو نہیں ؟ کیا قرآن ہر ایک کو مخاطب کر کے نہیں کہتا کہ افلا تعقلون ، افلا تدبرون ؟ کیا تم عقل سے کام نہیں لیتے ، کیا تم تدبر و غور و فکر سے کام نہیں لیتے ؟

جو لوگ یا علماصرف دور سے تماشہ دیکھتے ہیں ان کا کہنا یہ ہے کہ یہ فرینڈشپ یا عارضی یا خفیہ شادی کی اجازت کم سے کم ہم اپنی بیٹیوں کو تو نہیں دے سکتے۔ آپ کا کہا سر آنکھوں پر لیکن اس کے پیچھے کوئی خیال اور تو نہیں ؟کیوں صاحب کیابیٹے ہی ہر جگہ منہ مارتے پھریں ، کیا کسی اور کی بیٹیوں ، ماؤں ، بہنوں کی کوئی عزت نہیں ؟ کیا دوسروں کے لئے آپ کی حمیت و شرافت و وقار کاپیمانہ دوسراہے ؟ کچھ کا کہنا ہے کہ اگر مردوں کو ہر قسم کی معاشرتی ذمہ داری سے آزادی مل گئی تو یہ ایک اور فتنہ کا دروازہ کھول دے گا۔ المسیار کی موجودگی میں کون اعلانیہ شادی کی مصیبت اٹھائے گا ۔یہ سارے کا سارا نظام Legal Prostitution نظر آتا ہے۔ یہ معاملہ لگتا ہے ہمیں بھی رفتہ رفتہ مغرب زدہ بنا دے گا جہاں اب اکثر مرد اور عورت میاں بیوی کی طرح بغیر نکاح و شادی کے ساتھ رہتے ہیںاور بچے بھی ہوتے رہتے ہیں ۔

بیویاں بھی بدلتی رہتی ہیں خفیہ طور پہ اور شوہر بھی بدلتے رہتے ہیں خفیہ طور پہ ۔ وہاں کی حکومت اور معاشرت نے ان ساری باتوں کو قبول کیا ہوا ہے۔ اس کے خلاف اٹھنے والی آواز کو انسانی حقوقِ آزادی کے خلاف سمجھتے ہیں اور اس پہ گرفت کرتے ہیں ۔یہ صرف اصطلاح کا فرق ہے اگر وہ اسے انسانی حقوقِ آزادی کی بجائے حیوانی اور شیطانیحقوقِ آزادی کہا کریں تو ہمیں کوئی اعتراض نہیں۔ ویسے بھی بعض فلسفیوں اور محققین کے نزدیک انسان حیوانِ ناطق ہی تو ہے۔

انسانی معاشرے میں مرد و زن سے متعلق جو مسائل درپیش ہو تے ہیں، ان کا حل درجہ ذیل ہیں :
١۔ خواتین یامرد کنوارے ہوں۔ عمر بڑھ رہی ہو ، کوئی بر نہیں مل رہا ہو تو فرد و معاشرے کے غیر ضروری اصراف، رسوم و پابندیوں کی اصلاح کی ضرورت ہے تاکہ شادیوں میں کوئی دشواری نہ پیدا ہو۔

٢۔ معاشرے میں بیوگان کی تعداد بڑھ رہی ہو تو ان کے لئے بھی وہی کچھ کیا جانا چاہیے جو اوپر بیان ہوا ہے تاکہ انہیں بھی تحفظ فراہم ہو۔ نکاحِ بیوگان کی ترغیب دی جائے،

٣۔ معاشرے میں طلاق شدہ خواتین کی تعداد بڑھ رہی ہو تو ان کے لئے بھی وہی کیا جانا چاہیے جو اوپر بیان ہوا ہے ۔ اور ساتھ ہی ساتھ طلاق کی کثرت کو ختم کرنے کی تدبیر کرنی چاہیے۔شادی میں کفو کا خیال رکھا جائے اور مردوں و عورتوں کی باطنی اصلاح کی جائے تاکہ دونوں شادی کی حرمت ، ایک دوسرے کی عزت و احترام کا خیال محبت کے ساتھ ساتھ رکھیں۔ ایسے ماحول اور طریقۂ زندگی سے بھی گریز کرنا چاہیے جس میں شوہر اور بیوی میں ایک دوسرے سے بے زاری پیدا ہو۔ اس کے علاوہ ایسے رئیسوںاور بگڑے ہوئے لوگوں کی تربیت اور ان کے خلاف قانونی چارہ جوئی کرنی چاہیے جو عورتوں کو اپنی دولت کا سہارا لے کے یا ان کی مجبوریوں کا فائدہ اٹھا کر یا کسی اور مقصد کے لئے اپنی ہوس کی تسکین کے لئے شادی کرتے ہیں اور اسے تنگ کرتے ہیں یا طلاق دے ڈالتے ہیں۔

٤۔ عورتوں کی آبادی کی کثرت ہو تو اس کا علاج کثرتِ ازواج ہے لیکن اعلانیہ حلال شادی ہوخفیہ نہیں۔ یہ بھی قدرت کا عجیب انتظام ہے ، اعداد و شمار بتاتے ہیں کہ عورتوں کی آبادی زیادہ ہوتی ہے ، مردوں کی عمر عورتوں کے مقابلے میں عموماً کم ہوتی ہے ، فرض کیجیے کہ کہیں مردوں کی آبادی زیادہ ہو بھی تو وہ کسی اور ملک یا علاقے کی کسی ٧
عورت سے اعلانیہ شادی کر سکتا ہے۔ اسلام میں اس کی بڑی گنجائش رکھی گئی ہے۔عورتیں بھی اگر دوسری یا تیسری بیوی نہیں بننا چاہتیں تو کسی بھی مسلمان مرد سے شادی کر سکتی ہیں چاہے وہ ان کے خاندان کا یا ملک کا ہو یا نہ ہو۔ اسلام مذہبِ کائنات ہے اس میں رنگ و نسل کی پیچیدگیاں نہیں ۔

بہت ساری دشواریاں گروہی ، رنگ و نسل کی متعصبانہ رویہ سے پیدا ہوتی ہیں۔کسی بیماری یا سببِ دیگر کے تحت اگر مرد یا عورت حقوق زوجیت ادا کرنے سے قاصر ہوں تو عورت اگر چاہے تو اپنی فطری شرم و حیا کو ملحوظِ خاطر رکھتے ہوئے اپنے وکیلوں کے زریعے یا قانونی طور پہ خلع لے سکتی ہے اور دوسرا نکاح کر سکتی ہے۔ ایک وقت میں اس کے دو شوہر نہیں ہو سکتے لیکن مرد کے لئے پہلی یا کسی بیوی کو طلاق دینا ضروری نہیں۔ وہ انسانی تعلقات کا لحاظ کرتے ہوئے ایسی بیوی سے مشفقانہ رویہ رکھ سکتا ہے اور اعلانیہ دوسری شادی کر سکتا ہے۔

مسائل چاہے جو بھی ہوں ، خفیہ ، عارضی ، فرینڈ شپ ، ویک اینڈ یا طلاق کے ساتھ مشروط شادیاں کبھی بھی اسلامی نہیں کہلائی جا سکتیں۔ ان ساری تجاویز میں بے وفائی ، نفاق ، سخت دلی ، ہوس پروری ، نفس پرستی اور حیوانیت کا عنصر نمایاں ہے جو اسلام کے روح کے خلاف ہے۔ بنیادی بات یہ ہے کہ کسی غیر اخلاقی عمل کی اصلاح کسی دوسرے غیر اخلاقی عمل سے نہیں ہوتی۔ انسانی ارتقا کو اب اس حد تک تو پہنچ جانا چاہیے کہ مردو زن ایک دوسرے کو انسان ہی سمجھیں اور اس ناطے ایک دوسرے کا احترام ایسے ہی کریں جیسے وہ خود اپنا کرتے ہیں ۔ عورتوں کو کال کوٹھری میں بند کر کے اور اسے سر سے پیر تک مبحھوس کر کے انسانی معاشرت ترقی کر سکتی ہے نہ اسے برہنہ کر کے اورمحافل کی زینت بنا کے اسے آزادی اور برابری کا خواب دکھا کر ۔ احترامِ آدمیت یا انسانیت کے تقاضے اور ہیں ۔ اصل کام اپنے اندر کے جانور اور حیوانیت کو لگام دینے کا ہے۔ اس کی تربیت کر کے انسان بنانے کی اشد ضرورت ہے خصوصاََ مردوں کو اس لئے کہ عورتوں میں ایک فطری حیا عموماً پائی جاتی ہے۔ افسوس کہ ہم اپنی وحشت و بے عقلی میں اللہ کے پیغام کو سمجھ نہیں پائے۔ اللہ سبحانہ و تعالیٰ کی رسی ، اور دامنِ رسول ۖ کو تھامے رہیے اور عقل کے دریچے کھولئے ، حکمتِ پیغامِ
الٰہی کو سمجھئے، صرف رسوم کی آبیاری ، بے عقلی کے فتاویٰ اور اندھی تقلید سے کام نہیں چلے گا۔

کہہ جاتا ہوں میں زورِ جنوں میں ترے اَسرار
مجھ کو بھی صِلہ دے مری آشفتہ سری کا

JEDDAH: The managing committee of Pakistan International School Jeddah-English Section (PISJ-ES) stands dissolved with the departure of Pakistan Ambassador Shahid Karimullah. This follows a directive from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Pakistani Consulate General as well as the school.

As per the ministry’s directive, the new committee will be nominated after the arrival of the new ambassador. Until then, school Principal Sehar Kamran will look after the school’s affairs.

The committee, nominated by Karimullah in 2007, was never able to take charge during his tenure due to strong reservations of the school staff about its formation with people who, as per the school’s claim, do not fulfill even the basic requirement to be on the management committee. After its formation when the committee tried to take charge, all 134 teaching staff of the school had offered to resign in protest.

Interestingly, the managing committee again tried to assume charge on Monday after two years of its formation, but just then the Pakistani Foreign Ministry’s directive came effectively making it clear that the committee headed by Jamal Mufti stands dissolved.

Saudi Arabia, despite sitting on the world's largest oil reserves, is considering nuclear technology to drive its power-hungry desalinisation plants, which supply water to the fast growing population.

France and Saudi Arabia are close to finalizing a civil nuclear cooperation pact which could lead to the sale of French atomic energy technology, French Economy Minister Christine Lagarde said on Sunday.

A deal could be completed "soon," Lagarde said after a day of meetings with top Saudi economic and energy officials as well as Saudi King Abdullah.

"The talks have progressed well," she added.

Lagarde gave no details of what would be covered by the agreement, but officials said it could be completed and signed by the end of 2009.

Riyadh last year signed a pact with Washington on civil nuclear cooperation, which the United States hopes will open the way for sales of US nuclear technology and equipment to the Saudis.

Lagarde was on a one-day visit to Riyadh to discuss bilateral economic issues and promote France's energy and transport sectors.

She said she held talks with Saudi oil officials on how to stabilise oil prices, which have swung wildly in the past year, and that a working group on the issue could meet soon in Paris.

"We want less volatility, more predictability," Lagarde said late Saturday after arriving in Riyadh.

She added that oil prices, currently around 57 dollars a barrel, would be reasonable at between 70 and 80 dollars a barrel, roughly half of the peak hit in July 2008.

"Most people would agree that anywhere between 70 and 80 dollars would be good," she said.

The decision, reported by newspapers Alwatan and Al-Riyadh, came after months of court hearings, criticism from the United Nations and an international media frenzy about Saudi Arabia's human rights practices. "This is a good step and I think the man did it because he was in a lot of pressure from everyone," Wajeha Al-Huaider, founder of the Group for Women's Rights in Saudi Arabia, told Reuters by telephone. Al-Huaider, who campaigned for the child, said she hoped the pressure generated by the case would eventually lead to a law banning child marriages. The child's mother, who opposed the marriage which took place when the girl was 8 years old, took the case to court last year. The court in the small town of Onaiza upheld the marriage on condition that the husband did not consummate it until the girl reached puberty. In Saudi Arabia's patriarchal society, which applies an austere version of Sunni Islam, fathers have the right to decide whom their daughters marry. "Islam does not specify an age for the marriage contract. The contract is one thing and the consummation of marriage is another," Ahmed Al Modi, an Islamic scholar and writer, told Reuters. In the case of the Onaiza child bride he said the judge could not order a divorce because the marriage contract was carried out according to established rules for marriage, which include the approval of the father. "When the child is under age the father can approve the marriage contract but as soon as the child reaches puberty she can object to the marriage," Al Modi said, emphasising that it was merely a contract, signed to "secure her future." He explained that in such cases the child usually remained in her parents' custody and her husband would be able to visit her. But he would not be permitted to live with her or consummate the marriage until she had reached puberty. Discussion about a legal age for marriage in Saudi Arabia took off after a senior Saudi cleric, Sheikh Mohsen al-Obaikan, was quoted in a local newspaper recently saying that girls under 18 years of age should not be allowed to marry. Many clerics in Saudi Arabia, including the Kingdom's chief cleric, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Al al-Sheikh, endorse the practice of young girls marrying. The Onaiza case attracted international criticism. "Irrespective of circumstances or the legal framework, the marriage of a child is a violation of that child's rights," UNICEF's chief, Ann Veneman, said earlier this month. Al Modi said Saudi Arabia was falling behind in the issue of child marriage. "Egypt assigned a legal age for marriage in 1975, now we have started to awaken," he said, adding that Arab countries like Jordon Syria, Lebanon and Egypt had already assigned a legal age for marriage. Saudi Power Struggle .... All within the family

A dispute over Saudi Arabia's royal succession burst into the open yesterday, revealing a power struggle in which one of the most senior princes in the oil-rich kingdom is reported to have disappeared. The prospect of instability in a country that is not only the world's largest oil exporter but also a key Western ally at the heart of the Middle East will cause serious concern in Washington, London and beyond.

Rumours are rife over the position of Prince Bandar bin Sultan, 60, son of the heir to the Saudi throne, who has not been seen in public for weeks. Prince Bandar is better known abroad than almost any other member of the Saudi royal family, not only for his extravagant lifestyle, but because of his daring foreign policy initiatives during 22 years as the Saudi ambassador in Washington, where he played an important role after 9/11 and during two Gulf wars. His absence from public life comes at a sensitive time in Saudi Arabia: his father, Crown Prince Sultan, is gravely ill with cancer, throwing the succession to King Abdullah into question.

One theory in political circles in Riyadh is that Prince Bandar was seeking to oust King Abdullah before Prince Sultan dies, thus placing his father on the throne. Other rumours claim that Prince Bandar is ill, or that he angered King Abdullah by dabbling in Syrian politics without authorisation. The Saudi embassy in London could not be contacted for comment last week, but this weekend political tensions in the kingdom came dramatically to the surface.

On Friday night King Abdullah unexpectedly announced the appointment of one of his half-brothers, Prince Nayef, the 76-year-old interior minister, to the post of second deputy prime minister, which had been left vacant. This was immediately taken as an indication that he would become crown prince when Prince Sultan dies or becomes king. But yesterday Prince Talal, another senior figure, publicly demanded that the king confirm that the appointment did not mean Prince Nayef would automatically become the next crown prince. Such public disagreement among senior Saudi royals is highly unusual.

Another indication of friction among the many descendants of the founder of Saudi Arabia, King Ibn Saud, who had 22 wives and more than 50 children, was the publication of a report last week by the Saudi National Society for Human Rights, one of the country's two human rights organisations. It was highly critical of Prince Nayef's draconian interior ministry, and is unlikely to have been released without the express say-so of another powerful member of the royal family.

Both Crown Prince Sultan and

Prince Nayef are members of the "Sudairi Six", the powerful surviving sons of Ibn Saud and his favourite wife, Hassa bint Ahmad Al-Sudairi. The seventh and eldest brother was King Fahd, who died in 2005; when he nominated his successor, in line with tradition, he bypassed his full brothers and chose Abdullah as crown prince.

The vying for position is intensified by Crown Prince Sultan's poor health. Aged about 85, he was first diagnosed with colon cancer in Jeddah in 2004. He has received treatment in Geneva and the US, and spent time convalescing in Morocco. Throughout his illness, Prince Nayef and another of the six brothers – Prince Salman, 73, the governor of Riyadh and another potential candidate for the succession – have stayed close to the crown prince's side. Three weeks ago Prince Nayef surprised viewers of prime-time Saudi TV by telephoning in during the news hour to tell viewers that Prince Sultan was recovering well, and would be returning home soon.

More independent information about the prince's condition has been suppressed, however. Last year, the long-serving Reuters bureau chief in Riyadh, Andrew Hammond, was told to leave the kingdom after reporting that Prince Sultan had cancer.

"I think Prince Nayef will be the next crown prince, because he is responsible for sensitive issues like security and he is supported by the players in the royal family," commented Abdul Aziz Al Khamis, the Saudi editor of Arabian Observer magazine, "but it is like a card game. Each plays his cards – power, security, money – and it's a very tough game."

Analysts believed King Abdullah, aware that his chosen successor might die before him, was thinking of skipping a generation in the nomination for his new deputy, in order to prevent a long procession of octogenarian kings as power passes from one elderly brother to another. But Friday's nomination of Prince Nayef, a hardliner whose rise to the throne would dismay many in the West, may have eliminated that possibility.

Since 2007 the mechanism for determining succession in Saudi Arabia has been the responsibility of the allegiance council, a 35-member official body formed from the sons and grandsons of Ibn Saud. Designed to smooth the transfer of power, the council promises the first Saudi succession decision to be made by consensus. Its creation by King Abdullah was widely praised by the West, but it may yet prove difficult for him to influence its decision, since the Sudairi Six are thought to have influence over more than half the council members.

To reduce the chance of a military coup, Saudi Arabia maintains a number of more or less equally powerful military forces, each under the command of different princes. King Abdullah controls the National Guard, but Prince Nayef heads the powerful interior ministry forces while also enjoying the support of Khaled bin Sultan, who has been effectively running the army on behalf of his invalid father for months.

Since the modern state of Saudi Arabia was founded in 1932, power has always transferred without civil strife, even though in 1975 King Faisal was assassinated by his half-brother's son. But in the more distant past, disagreements over succession often turned nasty. At the end of the 19th century, the second Saudi state destroyed itself through fratricidal conflict. In recent times Saudi Arabia has been rocked by jihadi violence and demonstrations by its Shia minority, and most observers expect the transition will in the end be peaceful.

"They have already destroyed themselves once by brother turning on brother," said Mr Al Khamis. "I don't think they will do it again." Sir Alan Munro, the former British ambassador to Saudi Arabia, said: "In this very powerful family there could be some measure of negotiation over nomination and succession, but I expect eventually it will turn out to be a smooth process."

The countries sending their maids there need to have a top level agreement with the Kingdom.

Such regulations, among other things, should include:

1- Payment of their regular monthly salaries in to a bank account, under the care of respective embassies
2- Monthly visits to them by the welfare counselor of respective embassies to inquire about their welfare
3- Strict laws to punish the abusive masters, who violate the monetary. legal, and moral values
4- Fixing of work hours, and ensuring that such a time table is adhered to
5- Telephone access facility - two way - to their embassies
6- Recreational leaves during their contract period, to help them keep their mental balance and health
7- Quarterly health checks, and direct reports to the embassies
8- “Transfer” of maids on a temporary basis should be made illegal. If the masters go somewhere leaving the maid alone, she should go to a safe house run by their embassies, for that period …
9- Physical punishment, and abuses of ALL kind should be monitored and punished accordingly

Many more similar points could be thought about and a legal frame-work devised. It should be noted that this problem is faced by maids working from a common man’s level to the highest places there. Recently a US Court has convicted a royal for similar abuses.

بیرون ملک قیام کے دوران جرائم میں ملوث ہونے کی خبروں کی اشاعت نے بنگلہ دیشی شہریوں کیلئے سعودی عرب میں ملازمتوں کا حصول مشکل بنا دیا۔ سعودی دارالحکومت ریاض میں بنگلہ دیشی سفارتخانہ کے سینئر عہدیدار وحید الرحمن نے سعودی ذرائع ابلاغ کو ایک انٹرویو میں بتایا کہ رواں سال کے پہلے چار ماہ کے دوران 8 ہزار بنگلہ دیشی خواتین و مرد سعودی عرب آئے لیکن ان میں سے کوئی ایک بھی گھریلو ملازم، ڈرائیور یا زرعی زمینوں پر کام کرنے والے مزدوروں کی حیثیت سے ملازمت حاصل کرنے میں کامیاب نہیں ہو سکا حالانکہ سعودی وزارت محنت نے بنگلہ دیشی شہریوں کے حوالہ سے کوئی ہدایت جاری نہیں کی۔ سفارتکار نے کہا کہ اس صورتحال نے سعودی عرب میں نرسوں اور ڈاکٹروں کی حیثیت سے ملازمتیں کرنے والے بنگلہ دیشی شہریوں کو بھی تشویش اور غیر یقینی کی صورتحال سے دوچار کر دیا ہے۔ سعودی تجزیہ نگاوں کے مطابق اس صورتحال کا باعث اخبارات میں شائع ہونے والی خبریں ہیں جن کے مطابق بنگلہ دیشی شہری جو اس وقت عرب اور خلیجی ریاستوں میں روزگار کے سلسلہ میں مقیم ہیں، کی اکثریت جرائم میں ملوث پائی جاتی ہے۔

Book on Saudi Arabia 'Zar Grifth' Launched

'ZAR GRIFTH' (ISBN-969-8831-00-00), a book about Saudi Arabia by a noted Pakistani writer, was launched earlier this week in Karachi.

Zar Grifth, a book in Urdu, about the life and times of the Pakistanis living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been published here.

"Zar Grifth", which means "In the Shackles of Money and Greed", is a project of JUSTUJU / The Quest Publishers and has been written by Mr. Hashim Syed Mohammad Bin Qasim, a well known writer and columnist. He is featured at many websites, Pak Tribune and Al Jazeerah. He has been quoted by reputed westren media sources such as Washington Post and Guardian UK.

Mostly in a lighthearted and a hilarious manner, and at times in a serious tone, the book documents the history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the ways of life of the close to one million Pakistanis ("PakBaans") living there, over the past quarter century.

This large size 270 page book has 26 Chapters addressing key segments of Saudi life, history, culture, commerce and religion. It is studded with a number of cartoons, sketches, and pictures, and carries two prefaces, penned by top Urdu critics from Karachi and New York.

The critics, Mr. Athar Hashmi (Chief Editor, daily Urdu Newspaper "Jasarath", Karachi), and Mr. Syed Mohammad Haneef Akhgar (a well known Urdu Poet and ex United Nations Development Program - UNDP - Regional Chief, for the Middle East), have expressed their optimism about the success of Zar Grifth among all those who are interested in this important Islamic Country.

These critics have hailed Zar Grifth as a must read not only for a common Pakistani, but also for the diplomats and employees of the Pakistan Government.

In Zargrifth, Mohammad Bin Qasim documents his novel experience in Saudi Arabia where he worked for 25 years (1981-2004). This is a country that is loved and revered by the Muslim Ummah because of the Kaaba, the house of God, being located there. It was also the abode of our last prophet, Hazrat Muhammad. (PBUH). Every Muslim dreams of the day when he would perform Haj and will be blessed by God.

As one reads through the book, one learns more about the social, economic and political structure of the country. It also describes the bitter realities of the place which are not any secret to the world. Almost everyone would have experienced these themselves or learned of them through friends and relatives.

The very first experience of the author at Riyadh airport was not very pleasant, as he witnessed one of his co-travellers being manhandled. Later, more compatriots were humiliated and discriminated against. The author holds ourselves responsible for this ill-treatment to some extent. There are numerous cases when Pakistanis have entered or tried to penetrate into the Kingdom with fake degrees and documents.

The book provides an insight into the social, economic and political structure of Saudi Arabia. A conservative, closed society, the literacy rate is low with still lower literacy in women. Women cannot drive, nor are they visible in the workplaces. Polygamy is common. The author has cited numerous instances of the low status of women which has often been reported by the print and the electronic media.

The book also throws light on the plight of the workforce from Pakistan and other Asian countries. Since all the migrant workers have to surrender their passports to their Saudi employers, their fate depends on the whims of the employers. Moreover, there is a vast difference between the pay scales of the western and Asian workforce. This difference is also obvious in their attitude towards both the communities.

While appraising the welfare and development work undertaken by the rulers, the author appreciates the honesty and integrity of the common man. Further, the author was in the Kingdom during the Gulf wars and records his personal experiences and views.

The book is entertaining too. Readers will come across anecdotes which are also a comment on the psyche of the indigenous population. The writer points out how linguistic differences create hilarious, as well as, odd situations.

While discussing the Pakistani school in Riyadh, its mismanagement and the negative role of the Pakistani community, the author observes that we are ready to find fault with others but very easily skip our own weaknesses.

The book could have done with better editing. While the book rightly claims to be a guide for people entering the job market in Saudi Arabia, the narration sometimes becomes too personal for a book of this nature. A long list of personal friends is boring for a general reader. Similarly, the recounting of personal problems could have been avoided. Occasionally, undue boasting detracts from the readability of the book.

If you already have been to the Kingdom, this book will refresh your memories of the place. If you have not been there before, you learn much from the book. You will know what to expect and what not to. - Syeda Saleha

y the grace of God Mohammad Bin Qasim’s Zar Grifth (“In the Shackles of Money and Greed”) has been beautifully written with an impressive focus on Saudi Arabia.

This book that comprises of 26 well knit Chapters, is neither his biography, nor a boring travelogue of his 25 years in the Kingdom. But it is an interesting compendium containing his own life philosophies, and his keen observations about Islam in Saudi Arabia, Saudi psychology and political trends, and comments about the future of Saudi Arabia.

He has included a great deal of such information that would be immensely helpful to those who plan to travel to Saudi Arabia either for employment or just for a visit. This makes this book, among other things, a very good guide book as well.

As far as the language and writing style is concerned, the book has been written in a lucid fashion, using interesting anecdotes, caricatures, jokes, adages, and relevant lines of classical Urdu poetry, that add greater value to its literary stature. Expression of certain truths sometimes requires a ruthless treatment by a writer, and probably such an entertaining writing style minimizes the bitterness and lets the reader enjoy a sweet and sour mixture of his prose.

I read this book, word by word, with a great deal of interest, as I personally served in the Kingdom as a Regional Representative of the United Nations Development Program, from March 1976 through June 1980. Apart from Saudi Arabia, I also handled Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and United Arab Emirates, with its regional headquarters in Riyadh. (Though, now the UNDP office in Riyadh is exclusively for Saudi Arabian programs.) With this perspective, I fully authenticate the views of the writer, who has used self-conscience and a self-righteousness in describing the simple but interesting life experiences in such a way that the reader would feel that he is also sub-consciously reaching a logical conclusion along with the mind of the writer.

Writing such a book in a foreign land, where senior literary guiding figures are not easily found, this effort can be termed as a Compendium of much needed advices. The writer has very ably introduced the readers to the social, religious, and humane frameworks and has commented about the upbringing of younger generations. He has clearly laid down that any extremism, whether relating to religious rites or relating to individual freedom, only leads to a depression and mental disorders. A man’s happiness and healthy life can only be achieved through enlightenment and moderation, and our moderate religion Islam also teaches this very way of life.

Another truth that highly pleased me is the manner of respect that the writer has shown towards his elders, and the loving care that he has evinced for his wife and daughters, is a blessing for which we all pray from our most beneficent and merciful Allah, the God.

Writing about the Saudi Royal family, the writer has provided information about the unprecedented development and expansions of the two holy mosques in Makkah al Mukarramah and Madinah al Munawwarah. This development is not only unique in the Islamic history, but it also shows that Saudi Arabia holds a central position in the hearts and minds of the Islamic Ummah, and Saudi Government is still closer to Islam than many other Islamic countries of the world. The philanthropic activities of the Saudi Government are widespread and global. Apart from this, the general integrity in daily lives, like careful measuring of sold products, performing the 5 times compulsory prayers with immaculate punctuality, and abiding by the promises is the majority’s way of life. We should also look for and adopt such good manners, instead of finding faults, and I fully agree with the writer about this thought.

If the readers absorb this book at a slower pace, and analyze their personal circumstances too, they would find many recipes for mental peace and a satisfaction of the heart, and would find many keys to success and prosperity in their lives. In fact this book is a graceful and witty effort of a sincere writer: a non-prejudiced and careful reading will result in discovering many techniques of a cool and unruffled life.

I congratulate the writer on his this epic literary prose, and pray to God the almighty to bless this effort, and especially let the Muslims benefit from it. Aamen.

Zar Grifth is an URDU language word. Urdu is spoken in Pakistan and India, and in a few other places around the world.

Hindi in India, and Urdu share a great deal of repository of a common vocabulary. Urdu, by itself is a Turkish word, which means ARMY. As the Urdu originally developed as a common platform of communications among the people living in old India, and the fact that it has words from many languages (Persian, Sanskirith, Arabic, Turkish, English, to name a few), the name URDU is very appropriate.

Zar Grifth means, Shackles of Money (and Greed, if you will).

So, what is this bLog for?

This is to introduce a book written in Urdu, about Saudi Arabia. It is being published in Pakistan, in Urdu first, on Saturday, August 14, 2004. Later it would be translated in to English, and other languages. But for English speaking readers, Chapter Summaries would be added to this web page to give them a taste of the book.

It is registered with the National Library of Pakistan, Islamabad. Its International Standard Book Number for cataloging data is: ISBN 969-8831-00-2. It is also copyrighted through the Registrar of Copyrights, Central Office, Karachi.

Zar Grifth is a lighthearted, hilarious, and at times serious, history of life and times of Pakistanis in Saudi Arabia, over the past quarter century.

The book is studded with a number of sketches and cartoons, and a few pictures.

It has 26 chapters, that throw a good light on the History, Culture, Way of life, Tourism, Pilgrimages, Politics, Commerce, and takes you through the reading trip as if you are seeing a movie, and experience the life as the writer did.

This book is for now available in Pakistan only. Its introductory price is Rs. 299, plus postage.

A beautiful HAMD (Praise to Allah) opens the book

Zar Grifth opens with a very powerful HAMD sonnet written by a great URDU poet, Mr. Muzaffar Warsi. It is known as "Aye Khuda, Aye Khuda, Jis nei Kee Justuju, Mil Gaya Usko Tou" (Ye thee, the God, Ye thee, the God, you are found by anyone, who makes a QUEST for you...).

One of the most popular Pakistani Music websites, Muziq.Net, managed by Mr. Rizwan, not only helped us out in determining the accuracy of the name of the writer of this HAMD, but also went one step further. At his website, he PUT the HAMD video for you all to View and Hear... Adnan Sami Khan's performance in this old Pakistan Television (PTV) Video is simply superb. Though he did one-upped this one in his movie, Sargam later in 1996.

Many thanks to dear Mr. Rizwan for this. As, in spite of this Hamd being so popular, there existed a confusion if it is penned by Mr. Muzaffar Warsi, or by Mr. Riazurrahman Saghar, the poet of movie Sargam. At least one web site, about Sargam, listed Riazurrahman as THE POET of the movie, without providing a credit to the real author of the HAMD that is astoundingly performed and filmed in the movie.

Unfortunately, this is a questionable practice in our part of the world. You would hear, and see a nice and moving song and music, but the broadcasters would NOT even tell you, who is the creator of that piece of art to begin with. This is such an injustice. So, our efforts in researching this matter paid off.

Go ahead and enjoy the Video and the Sights and Sounds of Zar Grifth :-) ... You are already on your way to a new world trip.
